On this day 15 years ago, The Witcher role-playing game was released. The game was based on the Witcher series of fantasy novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The white-haired monster hunter is a mega-popular character, but in 2007, he was not well known outside of Poland.
However, thanks to CD Projekt Red, and their first game in the fantasy universe of The Witcher, the whole world knew about Geralt of Rivia. The game came out really amazing, with a deep, immersive story that forced players to think and make choices, not just work their way to stardom. The opening cinematic, by the way, was nominated for “Outstanding Pre-VFX in a Video Game” at the 2007 VES Awards, and the game’s soundtrack was named “Best Fantasy Game Soundtrack” at the 2007 Radio Rivendell Fantasy Awards.
Now, 15 years later, The Witcher has taken over the world, becoming a mega-popular franchise, spawning a trilogy, a card spin-off, an anime series, and a live-action adaptation starring Henry Cavill. And in the future there will be even more video games and other projects. But we should not forget, thanks to which game we have all this.
