After the sad scene with the burial of beloved house elf Dobby, fans quickly recognized the real location of the filming, where a memorial was later arranged. People carried to the beach and laid to the “grave” various memorabilia, the most common of which, of course, was a sock. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry gives an elf a sock to free him.
Now, Freshwater West Beach in the UK is a protected area with many protected species: large gray seals, porpoises and some of the largest populations of seabirds in the world. That is why local authorities are urging fans to no longer bring socks to the memorial, as this pollutes the area and thus threatens the inhabitants of the beach.
