AMD today unveiled its latest RDNA-3 based graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, and provided some updates on its publisher partnerships. The big revelation was that AMD and Ubisoft have teamed up to optimize a new version of the Snowdrop engine that will be used in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars project and Splinter Cell remake.
AMD showed off a brief tech demo of the Snowdrop Engine, showcasing global illumination, shadows, and more with ray tracing. Luckily, AMD’s “highly optimized” implementation of ray tracing delivers impressive performance despite the visual frills. At 4K resolution with high performance ray tracing enabled, the demo runs at over 80fps with FSR. It’s not entirely clear yet how the performance of this Snowdrop Engine demo will translate into a real game like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, but AMD GPU owners excited about Ubisoft’s project probably have nothing to worry about.
