From the very beginning, The Witcher from Netflix caused a lot of controversy among viewers. It seems that the creators of the series did not care about the source material. They interpreted the works of Andrzej Sapkowski in their own way, and this, as we all know, negatively affected the perception of the community.
Despite all the complaints that poured out on the series, the production had one advantage, which basically attracted the audience. It was the actor playing the role of Geralt – Henry Cavill. For years, the British actor enjoyed considerable popularity and a reputation as an avid fan of Sapkowski’s novels. Unfortunately, he decided to hang up his two swords and look for new challenges elsewhere.
Interestingly, however, Cavill’s decision to leave the series did not make him enemies. On the contrary, fans who do not love the series understand this very well. While we don’t know the specific reasons for the actor’s departure (they could be related to his return to the role of Superman), many believe that the actor simply could not come to terms with what Netflix is doing with Andrzej Sapkowski’s work. Below are some examples of comments from Reddit users.
Respect for him, it shows how honest he is, he would rather lose the role than expose it to ridicule.
I don’t blame him. He loves books and games, and they [создатели сериала] not listened to any of his ideas about it.
Henry, I know you’re here, and I just want to tell you, you’re doing great, man. You deserve more, The Witcher deserves more. You were my favorite part of that show.
While the streaming giant has no plans to end the adventures of The Witcher (Liam Hemsworth will take over the role of Geralt starting in season four), it looks like a significant portion of existing viewers will let go of a series that lacks their favorite character.
This means that after [после третьего сезона] I’m leaving the series. Cavill was a great Geralt. And I saw Liam Hemsworth play. He’s not even remotely as good as Cavill.
He was the only thing that made it possible to watch the series. I hardly watched the second season, but I liked it as Geralt.
Henry was the reason I endured this series. I don’t want to offend Liam, but after C3 I’m leaving. Good thing Superman is back.
Judging by the tone of the comments above, it looks like Netflix’s The Witcher is going through some really tough times. Will the show survive without Cavill? We will know about this after a while. The premiere of the third season is scheduled for the summer of 2023.
